Frequently asked questions
What religion is the Uniting Church?
The Uniting Church in Australia is a Protestant Christian denomination formed in 1977 by the merger of the Methodist Church of Australasia, most of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, and the Congregational Union of Australia. It is the third-largest Christian denomination in Australia and is in the Reformed Protestant tradition.
Does the Uniting Church in Australia accept LGBTQ members and marriages?
Yes. In 2018, the Uniting Church Assembly voted to allow ministers to officiate same-sex marriages within the Church, while continuing to allow ministers and congregations to hold to a traditional view. The Uniting Church is one of the more progressive mainline Australian denominations on LGBTQ inclusion.
Is the Uniting Church in Australia declining?
The Uniting Church has experienced membership decline since its 1977 formation, mirroring patterns across mainline Protestant denominations globally. ABS Census data shows decreasing self-identification with the Uniting Church between 1991 and 2021. Individual congregations vary widely — some are growing, particularly those in newer suburbs.
What is the Uniting Church controversy about same-sex marriage?
The 2018 Assembly decision to allow same-sex marriages created internal tension. Some congregations and ministers strongly disagreed and a small number departed to form alternative networks. The Uniting Church has continued to operate with both traditions of belief co-existing under its national constitution.
Does the Uniting Church ordain women?
Yes. The Uniting Church has ordained women as ministers since its 1977 formation, inheriting this practice from the Methodist Church which had ordained women from 1969 in Australia. Women have served as the Church's national President (the Assembly's highest office).
