Data sourcing

The Australian Church Directory is compiled from publicly listed Christian church information. Listings are reviewed periodically and updated when corrections or additions are reported. The directory covers all 8 Australian states and territories and every major Christian denomination.

Last reviewed: 2026-06-08.

Where the data comes from

Each listing is compiled from publicly available church information — church and denominational websites, public parish finders, and other sources where the church has chosen to publish its details. We don't republish data from private databases and we don't collect data that the church itself hasn't made public.

Where a denomination publishes its own authoritative finder — for example the Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, Lutheran, or ACC parish finders — those finders remain the source of record for that denomination's churches. The Australian Church Directory is a cross-denominational reference; for denomination-specific details, the denominational finder will always be more current.

What we capture for each listing

FieldNotes
Church nameOfficial name as published by the church or its denomination
DenominationOne of 16 categories: Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, Baptist, Pentecostal, Orthodox, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Seventh-day Adventist, Salvation Army, Churches of Christ, Independent, or denomination-specific Orthodox variants (Greek, Coptic, Serbian, Russian, Antiochian)
SuburbSuburb the church is physically located in
StateOne of NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, ACT, NT
AddressStreet address where publicly listed
Geo-coordinatesLatitude and longitude where derivable from address
Service informationService times where the church publishes them
Contact detailsPhone, email, or website where publicly listed

Not every field is populated for every listing. Where a church has not publicly published service times, contact details, or other information, the directory simply omits that field rather than guessing.

Coverage

The directory currently lists over 4,400 active Christian churches across 870+ suburbs in all 8 Australian states and territories. Coverage is broadest in NSW, VIC, and QLD, and reflects where Christian congregations are physically present in Australia rather than where the directory has chosen to focus — sparsely populated regions (NT, parts of WA) have correspondingly fewer listings.

How often the data is reviewed

Listings are reviewed periodically and updated when:

  • A church administrator or representative reports a change
  • A visitor reports an error (closed church, wrong address, wrong denomination)
  • A periodic batch review identifies stale records

For the full update, correction, and removal process see our editorial policy.

Known limitations

  • Recently closed churches. A church that has closed in the last few months may still appear in the directory until the closure is reported. Report a closure.
  • Service times. Where service times are published they may not reflect recent schedule changes. Always confirm directly with the church before attending for the first time.
  • Denominational categorisation.A small number of churches sit between categories — for example, an independent congregation in fellowship with a denomination, or a multi-denominational service. The directory uses the self-described category where one is published.
  • Non-English-language congregations. Non-English-language services (Greek, Korean, Vietnamese, Tamil, Chinese, Coptic, Arabic) may be undercounted where the congregation does not publish an English-language listing.
