What is a Brethren church?
Brethren congregations (also called Plymouth Brethren or Open Brethren) are conservative Evangelical Christian assemblies originating from a 19th-century movement that emphasised simple New Testament patterns of worship — weekly Communion (the Lord's Supper) led by participating brothers rather than an ordained minister, and gathered believer membership.
How is a Brethren church different from other Christian churches?
Brethren assemblies typically have no ordained clergy — Sunday worship is led by participating men of the congregation. Communion ("the breaking of bread") is celebrated every Sunday and is central to worship. There is no central denominational structure; each assembly is autonomous and decisions are made by the elders.
Are women allowed to teach in a Brethren church?
Most traditional Brethren assemblies follow a complementarian reading of Scripture and reserve public teaching and pastoral leadership for men. Women participate fully in singing, prayer, hospitality, and many other forms of service, but typically not in public preaching or leadership of the breaking of bread.
